If your doctor has uttered these words to you, PLEASE, find another doctor.  Friends, you need your hormones. They are not just for making babies.

Back in the mid-1990s, I worked for an OB/GYN. Women would come into the office all the time complaining of period issues. Heavy periods, miserable PMS, irregular periods, and so on. And 9 times out of 10, the OB/GYN would recommend the birth control pill.

“You don’t really need your hormones until you are ready to have a baby,” he would say.

And just like that, they’d walk out of the office with a script for the birth control pill in hand.

These women trusted their doctors. They didn’t know that the birth control pill would flatline their body’s production of hormones and put them at risk for a whole host of side effects and health issues.

.Fast forward to today, and women are still being told this by their doctors. I am a big fan of doctors so please don’t take this as doctor bashing. But I am a veteran nurse of almost 27 years and it’s my job to be a patient advocate.

Patient education and advocacy have always been my favorite part of the job.

Women have the right to learn about their bodies.

Women have a right to know that their hormones are not just for making babies, and in fact, these hormones confer a whole host of benefits in the body that reaches far beyond just babies and libido.

Hormones protect our brains and our bones, our blood vessels and our vagina, our bladder and our skin, and so much more!

You’ve got to get educated you guys and you’ve got to be an advocate for yourself when it comes to your health. If your doctor isn’t willing to listen, then it’s time to find a new doctor.
